Further Evidence for the "Empty Oceans, Empty Nets" Video

Atlantic Bluefin tuna are on the edge of extinction and the group set up to protect them is responsible for it. How ironic is that? There was an international fisheries group set up to protect these tuna by setting low quotas, but now this group is to blame for setting ridiculously high quotas on fishing these tuna to the edge of extinction. Why is it that people do not understand the need to keep these animals around? Why don't people realize that once these fish are gone completely they will be out of business and only be hurting themselves. The group is to blame for ignoring the advice of its own scientists suggestions on quotas. As stated in this article from yahoo news, "The world's first fisheries management agency formed out of concern for this one species, never followed their own science, never lived up to their mandate to manage for a sustainable yield." These people came together to form a group that never followed up on its purpose in the first place. As a member of the human species I am disgusted with the greed and irresponsibility displayed by this group. We need to learn to live in a sustainable manner and this group definitely did not act that way. Not only will the extinction of a species that we consume in large quantities hurt us, but it will upset the ecosystem in which this fish played a role. People need to start thinking with their brains. People need to understand the implications of their actions. Hopefully this species can still be salvaged by seriously cutting quotas on fishing.
