Whole foods junkie

After the guest speaker came to our class it help reassured me my reasons behind being a vegetarian.  Even before he presented us with the methods of how animals are treated and separated from their families i was aware of such torture and lack of care.  But what did surprise me was when he mentioned that the methods in which organic fruits and vegetables are grown the same as regular fruits in vegetables.  I personally am a whole foods junkie (a supermarket) and i usually only eat their organic and locally grown fruit and vegetables and to think there is no difference between the two surprised me.  I was taught previously that there is less of a chemical process in making those that are organic, which means less chemicals in the environment but now i am unsure of what is the actual difference of organic and inorganic.  Upon this fact i am unsure if i will continue to buy organic produce though i will still continue to buy locally grown products.  Coming from an elementary school who instilled the idea of buying from farmers markets, and often took trips to such markets, i was a proud participant in this until i came to SUNY Albany and became unknowledgeable of where these such things existed, and even gave up after seeing there were no local fruit stands in the area as well.  I began to feel as though i wasn't living in the current times and began to realize the lack of environmental knowledge the city suffered from, especially being the capital.  There are so many positives to having local farms and the markets in the local area buying from them.  Its beneficial for the farmer, but for everyone and the environment.  I was proud but also shocked to see they had local gardens within the 5 boroughs which i hardly ever see, and which saddens me.  But what also scares me is the idea that they do exist and very few realize this.  I believe that not only should we produce gardens with in large cities but also make the people in the community knowledgeable of the gardens and its benefits.  But for now until i can grow my own garden i will continue to be a whole foods junkie who supports local farms, and especially for such a large chain supermarket it is completely environmental friendly and even promotes buying cloth bags to replace the continuous usage of plastic bags.  Forever a whole food junkie.
